Intentional Nutrition #2: Nutrients, Neurotransmitters, and Your Mood

Behind every thought, feeling, and burst of energy are neurotransmitters — chemical messengers in the brain. What we eat provides the building blocks for these messengers, meaning nutrition directly influences focus, motivation, calm, and resilience.

Key Nutrients and Their Neurotransmitter Connections

Magnesium Supports: GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), the neurotransmitter that promotes calm and relaxation. Food sources: Spinach, almonds, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate. Why it matters: Low magnesium is linked with stress, irritability, and poor sleep.

B Vitamins (especially B6, B9, B12) Support: Serotonin and dopamine production. Food sources: Leafy greens (B9/folate), eggs, fish, poultry, beef, fortified cereals. Why it matters: Deficiencies may contribute to depression, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Tryptophan (an amino acid) Supports: Serotonin, the “happiness and calm” neurotransmitter. Food sources: Turkey, chicken, eggs, oats, seeds. Why it matters: Adequate tryptophan intake can promote balanced mood and better sleep.

Tyrosine (an amino acid) Supports: Dopamine and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters tied to motivation, alertness, and focus. Food sources: Chicken, cheese, soy, peanuts, fish. Why it matters: Helps maintain drive, attention, and resilience under stress.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA) Support: Dopamine and serotonin signaling. Food sources: Salmon, sardines, tuna, walnuts, flax and chia seeds. Why it matters: Consistently linked to lower rates of depression and improved cognitive function.

Iron & Zinc Support: Dopamine production and overall brain energy metabolism. Food sources: Lean red meat, lentils, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas. Why it matters: Low iron = fatigue and brain fog; low zinc = increased stress and low mood.

Everyday Actions You Can Try

Add pumpkin seeds to salads or yogurt → easy way to boost magnesium and zinc.

Swap refined bread for whole-grain or oats → adds B vitamins and tryptophan support.

Include fish twice per week (or walnuts/flax seeds daily) → for steady omega-3s.

Choose dark leafy greens daily → folate (B9) supports serotonin and dopamine balance.

Enjoy a square of dark chocolate → combines magnesium, antioxidants, and a small serotonin lift.

The Takeaway

Think of food as brain fuel: it provides the raw materials to build and balance neurotransmitters. By choosing foods rich in magnesium, B vitamins, omega-3s, and amino acids, you’re directly supporting your mood, memory, and energy levels. Small swaps add up — one handful of seeds, one serving of greens, one piece of fish — and your brain will thank you.

Kick off our Intentional Nutrition series with simple, realistic habits you can start today—no superfoods required.

Below are seven simple, mood-friendly actions you can take today.

Food doesn’t just fill us up—it shapes our mood, energy, and focus. Research in nutritional psychiatry shows that everyday choices can support neurotransmitters, stabilize blood sugar, and reduce inflammation in ways that affect how we feel.

How Foods Affect Mood (Quick Look)

Protein foods (eggs, chicken, beans, yogurt) help build dopamine and serotonin for focus and motivation.

Omega‑3s (canned tuna/salmon, walnuts, flax) support mood and calm inflammation.

Complex carbs (oats, whole‑grain bread, potatoes, beans) provide steadier energy and support serotonin.

Leafy greens (spinach, kale) deliver stress‑supportive magnesium and B‑vitamins.

Fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi) nurture the gut–brain axis.

Dark chocolate (70%+) in small amounts can positively influence mood via cocoa flavanols.

Too much sugar & ultra‑processed foods = quick spikes, faster crashes, more irritability.

7 Simple Things You Can Start Today

Lemon water in the morning. A glass of water on waking supports hydration and alertness. Adding lemon makes it enjoyable (and adds a bit of vitamin C). Some studies show water can slightly raise energy expenditure for a short time, but the effect is modest—do it mainly to hydrate.1, 2

Eggs for breakfast. Scrambled, boiled, or on toast—protein steadies energy and helps concentration.

Grab a handful of nuts. Walnuts, almonds, or peanuts = quick, portable mood‑supportive fats and minerals.

Swap soda for sparkling water + fruit. Add lemon/lime or a few berries for flavor without the sugar crash.

“Add a green” to what you’re already eating. Toss spinach into eggs, pasta, soups, or sandwiches.

Yogurt + berries. An easy snack or dessert that supports gut health and stable energy.

One or two squares of dark chocolate (70%+). A satisfying treat with cocoa flavanols linked to mood benefits.

Friendly reminder: If you have medical conditions, allergies, or take medications (e.g., anticoagulants), check with your clinician or dietitian before making dietary changes.

Why this works (in brief)

These habits increase fiber, healthy fats, protein, and micronutrients that support the brain and nervous system, while reducing sharp blood‑sugar swings. They’re grounded in dietary patterns shown to help mood in clinical trials and meta‑analyses (see references).

When stress builds up, it can feel like you’re about to lose control. Your thoughts may race, your body tenses, and you might hear yourself thinking things like:

“I can’t do this.”
“I’m a failure.”
“There’s no point.”
“I just want to run away.”

These moments don’t always turn into a full panic attack, but they can still push you toward unhealthy habits, reckless choices, or shutting down completely. That’s why it’s so important to have a simple tool you can carry with you — something short, practical, and reliable when overwhelm strikes.

At Circle of Life Coaching, we created the RESET Pocket Card for exactly this purpose. It’s a step-by-step guide designed to help you calm your body, ground your mind, and regain perspective.

What is RESET?

RESET is a quick sequence based on research-informed mindfulness, grounding, and CBT strategies. It’s designed to be short enough to use in the middle of an overwhelming moment, but effective enough to shift your nervous system back toward balance.

R – Recognize

Name what’s happening: “I feel anxious.” “I feel overwhelmed.”

Naming begins the grounding process and creates space from the feeling.

E – Extreme Release

Deep inhale + hard exhale

OR squeeze your body for 5 seconds → then release

S – Slow Breathing

Box Breathing: inhale 4 / hold 4 / exhale 4 / hold 4 (3–5 cycles)

Tip: Let your exhale be longer than your inhale — it signals safety to your body.

E – Engage Grounding

Try the 5-4-3-2-1 senses check

Or: press your feet into the floor, stretch, or run your hands under cool water

T – Talk (Optional)

Reach out to a friend, counselor, or crisis line for connection

Quick Grounding Add-Ons

Hold an ice cube

Step outside & notice the sky

Name 5 objects around you in detail

Keep a small object (stone/coin) to focus on

Why It Works

Overwhelm and panic live in the body just as much as the mind. RESET helps in three key ways:

Energy Release: Discharges pent-up adrenaline and tension.

Breath Control: Shifts your nervous system from fight-or-flight into a calmer state.

Grounding: Brings your focus back to the present moment instead of spiraling thoughts.

Even if you don’t feel instantly calm, practicing RESET consistently trains your body to recover faster from stress.

Safety Note

If you’re at risk of harming yourself or others, call or text 988 (U.S. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Veterans: press 1 or text 838255.

Download the Pocket Card

You don’t have to remember all of this in the heat of the moment. Print out the RESET Pocket Card, keep it in your wallet, or save it as your phone wallpaper for instant access.

Download the RESET Pocket Card here

Final Word

Overwhelm happens to everyone. What matters is not avoiding it entirely, but knowing how to respond when it comes. With the RESET Pocket Card, you’ll always have a reliable guide to help you pause, reset, and re-begin.

Meta Description: Too many people avoid therapy due to outdated stigma. Learn how to break through shame, explore why people go to counseling, and take your first step toward healing with Circle of Life Coaching.

What Is the Stigma Around Counseling?

Even in today’s world of growing mental health awareness, many people still hesitate to reach out for help. The reason? Stigma.

Counseling stigma is the belief—often unspoken—that seeing a therapist means something is “wrong” with you. It can make people feel embarrassed, ashamed, or even weak for seeking support. This outdated thinking causes too many people to suffer in silence instead of getting the help they deserve.

How Common Is This Stigma?

Stigma is more common than you might think. While conversations about mental health have improved, research shows that many individuals—especially men, people in high-stress careers, or from certain cultural backgrounds—still see counseling as taboo.

Some common beliefs include:

“I should be able to handle this on my own.”

“Counseling is only for people with serious problems.”

“Talking about feelings is uncomfortable or weak.”

“What if people find out I’m in therapy?”

But here’s the truth: counseling isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a powerful act of self-awareness and strength.

Why People Go to Counseling

Counseling isn’t just for crisis moments. People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, including:

Managing stress or anxiety

Grieving the loss of a loved one

Improving self-esteem and confidence

Healing from trauma or abuse

Navigating relationship or family challenges

Breaking harmful habits or thought patterns

Gaining clarity during life transitions

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone—and counseling can help.

How to Overcome the Stigma and Start Healing

It’s normal to feel nervous about reaching out. But the first step is reminding yourself that therapy is for everyone. It’s a resource—not a rescue mission.

Here are a few ways to overcome counseling stigma:

Reframe the idea: Counseling is a tool for growth, not a sign of failure.

Talk about it: Share your interest in counseling with trusted friends or family—chances are, they’ve been there too.

Start small: Book one session just to talk, with no pressure or commitment.

Choose a counselor you connect with: Therapy is personal—finding the right fit matters.

You Deserve to Feel Better

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just ready for something more, counseling can help you move forward with clarity and support.

Circle of Life Coaching Is Here to Support You

We believe therapy should be welcoming, compassionate, and judgment-free. Whether you’re facing a specific challenge or just need a safe space to talk, Circle of Life Coaching is here to walk beside you.

In a world where stress, responsibilities, and unspoken emotions build up fast, sometimes the best medicine isn’t therapy—it’s simply talking.

There’s something profoundly healing about being heard.
Not analyzed. Not judged. Just heard.

Whether it’s venting about your day, expressing what’s been weighing on your heart, or saying things you didn’t even know you needed to say—speaking to another person can bring a sense of lightness, clarity, and relief.

Why Talking Helps

Talking out loud forces us to organize our thoughts. When we speak, emotions that have been swirling around in our minds start to settle. Often, we don’t need someone to solve our problems—we just need to say them out loud in a safe space.

It’s in that moment of connection, when someone truly listens, that we begin to feel a little less alone.

Connection Is a Basic Human Need

We are wired for connection.

Studies show that loneliness and isolation can be as harmful to health as smoking or obesity. Meaningful conversation can lower stress, boost mood, and create a sense of belonging.

And you don’t need to “have it all figured out” to start. You don’t need a diagnosis. You don’t need to commit to long-term therapy.

You just need a moment of real human connection.

This Isn’t Counseling—It’s Conversation

Maybe you’re not ready for counseling, and that’s okay. Maybe you’re tired of bottling things up or “being strong” all the time.

That’s where Just Talk sessions come in.

It’s a space where you can speak your mind, say the things you don’t want to say to friends or family, and be met with empathy—not advice.

You don’t have to go through things silently.
You don’t have to carry it alone.

No therapy? Just Talk.
Book a Just Talk session today and get s*** off your chest.

Reiki for Emotional Cleansing: Kickstart Your Wellness Reset

Meta Description: Feeling drained, stressed, or out of balance? Learn how Reiki can jumpstart an emotional and energetic cleanse—perfect for your next full-body wellness reset.

Ready to Feel Clear, Calm, and Reconnected?

If you’ve ever done a juice cleanse or reset your eating habits, you already understand the power of a good detox. But what about your emotional body? Your energy system? Your spirit?

Stress, poor diet, and spiritual neglect take a real toll—not just physically, but emotionally and energetically. That’s why more and more people are adding Reiki to their wellness routines. It’s the energetic cleanse your mind and spirit didn’t know they needed.

How Stress Builds Up in the Body

Most of us carry far more stress than we realize. It hides in our muscles, mood, digestion, and sleep—until we start breaking down emotionally or physically.

Common symptoms of stress overload include:

Fatigue or constant tiredness

Tight shoulders, clenched jaw, tension headaches

Difficulty sleeping or racing thoughts

Brain fog or forgetfulness

Increased anxiety or irritability

Stress can block your natural healing systems and create energy congestion in your body. Reiki helps release those energetic “knots” and brings your nervous system into a relaxed, healing state.

What Poor Diet Does to Your Energy

Food fuels more than your body—it affects your emotions and energy levels too. When we eat poorly, it adds heaviness to our mood and mind.

Common signs of diet-related energy imbalance:

Bloating or sluggish digestion

Low energy or afternoon crashes

Cravings for sugar, caffeine, or processed food

Brain fog, poor concentration

Feeling “weighed down” emotionally

When combined with mindful eating and hydration, Reiki helps support your body’s natural detox systems—clearing stuck emotional patterns and bringing in lightness, clarity, and peace.

Spiritual Neglect Is Real—And Heavy

We don’t always realize when we’ve disconnected from ourselves spiritually. But that disconnection shows up in how we feel.

Symptoms of spiritual disconnection:

Feeling lost or numb

Lack of purpose or joy

Difficulty setting boundaries or trusting intuition

Unresolved emotional pain or stuck grief

Reiki is a gentle yet powerful way to realign with your inner self. It reconnects you to your core, clears stagnant energy, and reminds you: you are whole, worthy, and deeply supported.

Make This Part of Your Cleanse Challenge

If you’re starting a dietary reset or wellness detox, don’t stop at green juice—add emotional cleansing to the plan. Book a Reiki session at the start of your cleanse to:

Release stored emotional stress

Quiet your mind and support restful sleep

Support your body’s natural detox process

Reconnect to your sense of purpose and clarity

Think of Reiki as your internal spring cleaning. No calories to count. No crash. Just energy flowing and your spirit realigned.

Begin Your Reset Today

At Circle of Life Coaching, we offer Reiki as a powerful tool to support your whole-self wellness—mind, body, and spirit. Whether you’re starting a cleanse or just feeling the weight of stress and disconnection, Reiki can be your first step toward clarity and balance.

A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Depression

Meta Description: Depression isn’t laziness or weakness. Learn the basic signs, contributing factors, and how counseling can help. Circle of Life Coaching offers a free session to get you started.

What Is Depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It’s a real mental health condition that affects how you think, feel, and function. It can make even the simplest tasks—like getting out of bed, taking a shower, or answering a text—feel overwhelming.

In simple terms: depression is a heavy feeling that doesn’t go away on its own. It’s not just a bad day or mood swing. It lingers, and it can make life feel dull, hopeless, or exhausting.

It’s Not Laziness—It’s Depression

One of the most common misconceptions about depression is that it looks like laziness. Someone with depression might stop cleaning their home, avoid social situations, or stay in bed for hours. But this isn’t because they don’t care—it’s because they feel mentally, emotionally, and physically drained.

Depression can rob people of motivation, energy, and joy. Saying someone is lazy for feeling this way is like calling someone with a broken leg weak for not running. It’s simply not true—and it’s not fair.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Low energy or fatigue, even after sleeping

Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy

Changes in appetite or sleep (too much or too little)

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness

Pulling away from people and isolating

Trouble concentrating or making decisions

Everyone’s experience is different. Some people may appear “fine” on the outside while struggling internally. That’s why it’s so important to listen to your inner world—and not ignore the signs.

What Causes Depression?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Depression can be caused by a mix of:

Life stress: Loss, trauma, or major changes

Chemical imbalances: Low levels of serotonin, dopamine, or other brain chemicals

Family history: Depression can run in families

Loneliness: Feeling disconnected or unsupported

Negative thinking patterns: Constant self-criticism or feeling “not enough”

Sometimes there’s no obvious reason. And that’s okay. You don’t need to “earn” your pain or explain it perfectly to deserve help.

How Counseling Can Help

Counseling provides a safe, supportive space to talk through what you’re feeling, without judgment. A trained counselor can help you:

Understand what you’re going through

Learn coping tools to manage stress and sadness

Shift negative thoughts into more helpful ones

Feel seen, heard, and understood

Most importantly, counseling reminds you: You’re not alone—and healing is possible.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

At Circle of Life Coaching, we understand how difficult it can be to take the first step. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just “not yourself,” we’re here to help you make sense of it—with care and compassion.

Mindfulness Meditation for Beginners: Start Small, Feel the Shift

Meta Description: New to mindfulness meditation? Learn simple steps to get started, what to expect, and how to grow your practice over time—even if you’ve never tried meditation before.

What Is Mindfulness Meditation?

Mindfulness meditation is a simple practice that trains your mind to stay in the present moment. It helps you notice your thoughts without judgment and return to your breath, body, or surroundings with calm awareness.

You don’t need incense, robes, or hours of free time to benefit from mindfulness. In fact, it’s one of the most accessible self-care tools you can start using today.

Why Try Mindfulness?

Reduces stress and anxiety

Improves focus and concentration

Enhances emotional regulation

Promotes better sleep

Builds self-awareness and confidence

Getting Started with Mindfulness Meditation

Here’s a beginner-friendly method you can try today:

Find a quiet, comfortable spot to sit or lie down.

Set a timer for 3–5 minutes (you can increase later).

Close your eyes gently and take a few deep breaths.

Focus your attention on the breath: feel the air enter your nose, fill your chest, and leave slowly.

When your mind wanders (and it will), simply notice it without judgment, and return to the breath.

That’s it. It may sound too easy to be effective—but simplicity is what makes mindfulness so powerful. Over time, you’re training your brain to pause, observe, and stay grounded instead of reacting automatically to stress or distraction.

Tips for Beginners

Start small—consistency is more important than duration.

Don’t worry about “emptying your mind”—just notice what’s there.

Try guided meditations using free apps like Insight Timer, Headspace, or Calm.

Be kind to yourself. Mindfulness is not about perfection—it’s about presence.

When You’re Ready to Go Deeper

Once you’re comfortable with basic mindfulness, you might explore:

Body scan meditation – noticing each part of the body in stillness

Loving-kindness meditation – sending compassion to yourself and others

Mindful walking – practicing awareness while moving

Mindfulness during daily tasks – like washing dishes, driving, or eating

Silent retreats – full-day or multi-day intensives to deepen awareness

Self-Care Starts With You

At Circle of Life Coaching, we believe mindfulness is one of the most powerful tools for healing, balance, and growth. Whether you’re just starting your journey or ready to deepen it, there’s always room to pause, breathe, and return to yourself.

Meta Description: Curious about Reiki? Learn what it is, how it can help with stress, sleep, and energy—and why trying it for the first time might be easier than you think.

What Is Reiki, and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a gentle form of energy healing that promotes relaxation, stress relief, and balance in the body and mind. During a session, a trained Reiki practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above your body, helping to release tension and support your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

You stay fully clothed, there are no needles or pressure, and most people say it feels deeply calming—like your nervous system is finally exhaling.

Everyday Benefits of Reiki

You don’t need to be sick, spiritual, or experienced to try Reiki. It’s great for:

Reducing daily stress and anxiety

Sleeping better at night

Feeling more focused and emotionally balanced

Managing headaches, fatigue, or chronic tension

Creating space for calm in a busy life

Many first-timers are surprised by how peaceful and “reset” they feel after just one session—even if they came in skeptical.

Try Reiki for Free—No Pressure, Just Peace

At Circle of Life Coaching, we know it can be hard to try something new. That’s why we offer a free 10-minute Reiki session to first-time clients—either in the comfort of your home or at our office. It’s a no-commitment way to experience what Reiki feels like and decide if it’s right for you.

Ready to relax? Book your FREE session. You have nothing to lose—except tension.

Meta Description: Many people know counseling could help but struggle to begin. Learn about the most common obstacles to starting therapy and how to overcome them.

“I Know Therapy Could Help, But…” — Understanding the Hesitation

Many people recognize the benefits of therapy—reduced anxiety, improved relationships, better coping tools—but still find themselves stuck at the starting line. They know they need support, yet they can’t seem to make that first appointment. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In fact, it’s incredibly common for people to delay therapy, sometimes for months or even years. Understanding the internal and external barriers that prevent people from starting counseling is the first step to overcoming them.

Common Obstacles to Starting Therapy

Stigma Around Mental Health: Despite growing awareness, many people still feel shame or embarrassment about seeking therapy. Cultural, generational, or personal beliefs can reinforce the idea that needing help is a weakness.

Fear of Vulnerability: Opening up to a stranger—even a trained professional—can feel terrifying. Many fear judgment, emotional overwhelm, or not knowing what to say.

Financial Concerns: Therapy can be seen as a luxury, especially if insurance coverage is limited or out-of-pocket costs are high.

Time and Scheduling Barriers: With busy work and family schedules, carving out time for regular therapy sessions may feel impossible.

Analysis Paralysis: With so many therapists, modalities, and platforms out there, some people feel overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.

How to Overcome These Obstacles

Reframe Therapy as Self-Respect, Not Weakness: Taking care of your mental health is no different from going to the gym or seeing a doctor. It’s a courageous act of self-care, not a sign of failure.

Start with Small, Manageable Steps: You don’t have to commit to lifelong therapy. Just start with one inquiry, one consultation, or even one journaling prompt to explore what you’re feeling.

Explore Affordable Options: Many communities offer sliding-scale fees, virtual therapy, or nonprofit clinics. Don’t be afraid to ask providers about payment plans or reduced rates.

Use Online Directories: Websites like Psychology Today or TherapyDen make it easy to search by specialty, insurance, or availability. Look for bios that resonate with you.

Be Honest About the Fear: Tell your therapist if you’re nervous about starting. A good counselor will help ease you in at your pace without pressure.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to know exactly what’s “wrong” before going to therapy. The truth? Many people come to counseling just feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of what they need. And that’s perfectly okay.

Your therapist’s job is to help you explore, understand, and grow. You don’t need a diagnosis to deserve support.

Ready to Take the First Step?

At WNY Circle of Life Coaching, we provide a safe, compassionate space for individuals ready to explore their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
